Fix Your Blind Spot: The Faux Wood Vs. Real Wood Venetian Blinds Dilemma

ByJessie Sanner

If you are anything like me – a huge lover of the classic style, you will be definitely torn apart between the choices of blinds available for your home. The huge variety of materials and wide quality range can be quite confusing, which is something I figured when I was choosing mine. The truth is, when I first heard about faux wood Venetian blinds, I was like “Ew, I don’t want anything fake in my home!”. Fortunately, my husband (the eternal cheapskate) convinced me to browse the offer on the Venetian blinds online Australia sites to see if I could find something that satisfies my taste. And I must say, I was impressed by what I came across. But since I wanted to stick to real wood blinds, I decided to compromise and put the faux version only on the kitchen and bathroom’s windows.

So, in order to save you the time and the headaches, I’ve decided to outline the pros and cons of my two personal favourites: faux vs real wood Venetian blinds online Australia retailers offer. Both have their respective pros and cons, so it is up to you to make the right decision.

Coincidentally, this was the best home improvement decision I have ever made. You see, unlike regular wood, faux wood Venetian blinds have the advantage of being moisture-resistant and are the perfect choice for wet and humid areas. Plus, their anti-static and anti-fungal qualities make them highly suitable for asthma sufferers. However, their functionality wasn’t the thing that drew me in. I’m more of a visual type and if it doesn’t look good, it won’t work for me. I’m all about visual appearances and colours, and sometimes the exact shade you need can be hard to find in natural wood blinds. The faux ones don’t have that problem though – the polymers and high impact polystyrene enhance the colour’s glow and offer enough protection so that it won’t chip or fade away easily. We can conclude that these blinds come with the benefit of being cheap like the metal ones, and with the classic charm of the genuine wooden blinds. The only con I can think of, is that I’m not sure how long they will last since I only got them recently.

On the other hand, wooden blinds offer proven durability and stability – and were the go-to Venetians for many people before the faux alternative became popular. If you are an old-fashioned kind of person, you are going to love the feeling these blinds give to a house – it’s like something straight out of the 70’s. When we got our new house, it had with pre-installed wooden Venetians by the previous owners who had lived there for 5 years. They were in a relatively good condition in the living-room and bedroom, so we decided to keep them. However, like I said, we had to put new ones in the kitchen and in the bathroom since the humidity in there had made an irreversible damage to the wood. If you go for Venetian blinds made of real wood, try to keep them dry at all times, and prepare to do a lot of repainting. Also, be very careful when cleaning them as the wood paint is not that chemical-resistant like its faux wood counterpart. So, if you don’t mind the constant attention they require and have a buck to spare on a more expensive design – these blinds are the ones for you.

After I’ve made my point, it’s up to you to make your decision. Make sure to choose a reliable Venetian blinds online Australia retailer to get the most for your money’s worth.
