Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay

Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay are probably the two most popular types of white wines. They look almost the same when in a wine glass, but have different tastes and characteristics. If you want to choose the ideal white wine for a special occasion and are in doubt whether to choose Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay, we come to the rescue. We researched characteristics, ingredients, color, aroma and taste of both Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay to help you learn more about these white wines and make the right selection.

Thus, we have learned that both Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio have pale yellow color. Pinot Grigio is tart and light, with little hint of green melon, while Chardonnay on the other hand, has a hint of fresh cut grass aroma. The main difference between these two incredible white wines can only be tasted. They are produced from different kinds of white grape varieties and with the use of different techniques.

Pinot Grigio Wine

Pinot Grigio wine is usually described as light and delicate white wine, made from Pinot Gris type of grape. The flavor can vary depending on the brand, but in general, Pinot Grigio is mild to medium dry white wine and is very similar to Sauvignon Blanc, because it is made from Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigo grape. Pinot Grigio wine is tangy and light, with pear, citrus and apple flavors and aromas. It is best known as a light and easy drinking summer wine.

Pinot Grigio can be perfectly paired with light foods like pasta, chicken and light fish (sea) dishes. However, when choosing Pinot Grigio, keep in mind that this wine does not pair very well with game meat and cream sauces. The most common Pinot Grigio wines that are affordable and can be easily found on the market are Cavit Pinot Grigio, Barefoot, Santa Margherita and Ecco Domani.

Chardonnay Wine

Chardonnay is a rich, full bodied and buttery tasting wine with oak flavor and aromas. Compared to Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay is a drier wine. Chardonnay grape variety is very sensitive to wine making procedures and as a result, different characteristics and techniques affect the flavor and aroma of this white wine. Chardonnay pairs ideally with heavier and more complex meals like pork dishes, lobster and heavy cream sauces, and does not pair very well with seafood and red meats. The most popular and inexpensive Chardonnay types of wines are Clos du Bois, Solitude, Ridge and Murphy – Goode.

The type of wine you choose will depend only on your taste and of course, occasion. Read carefully the characteristics of both Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio wine, and if possible, taste both before making your decision.
